A Final Note About Freelancer Rates
- If you work for an employer (in the United States), you pay half of federal employee taxes, which comes out to a median of 6.2%. Your employer pays the the other 6.2%.
- As a freelancer (again, in the United States), you're self-employed and therefore responsible for paying for all of your federal employee taxes on earned income, which comes out to the full 12.4%.
- But wait, there's more! A self-employed freelancer has to pay employer taxes too. Tack on an additional 12.4% in taxes.
- So, to recap: A salaried employee pays 6.2% in federal taxes, a self-employed freelancer pays 25%.
